South Park: Tokugawa Walkthrough
South Park: Tokugawa is a fighting game based on the Comedy Central series, South Park. To be specific, it is based on the first episode of South Park's eight season, entitled "Good Times with Weapons", one of my personal favorite episodes. Just as this episode of South Park parodied anime, South Park: Tokugawa parodies the classic fighting game, Street Fighter II.
In South Park: Tokugawa, you control Stan, Cartman, Kenny, or Kyle in their ninja forms. Your objective is to beat your opponent in two-out-of-three rounds, just like in Street Fighter II. If you defeat your opponent, you will advance to the next fight; if you are beaten, you will have the opportunity to continue and try to beat your opponent again. You have unlimited continues in this fighting game.
South Park: Tokugawa uses a keyboard-only control scheme, but a game control can be used as well with the help of a program such as JoyToKey. The arrow keys are used to move your character. Moving away from an attacking opponent will cause your character to block. The A and S keys perform fierce and quick kicks respectively. The Z and X keys perform fierce and quick punches respectively. The attack keys do not coincide with the standard layout of fighting games on a QWERTY keyboard and cannot be changed, so you will just have to get used to them. Press the spacebar or enter keys on the character selection screen to choose your character, or on the post-fight quote screen to advance to the next fight. You may also press the spacebar or enter key to skip the intro and pre-game instructions.
South Park: Tokugawa does an excellent job of parodying Street Fighter II, right down to the AI becoming more difficult in later fights. By the third fight, the AI might start spamming special attacks (especially Cartman, A.K.K. Bulrog). If this happens, try to close in and unleash a relentless combo. The in-game instructions do not indicate whether human players can use special attacks. I assume that we cannot, since I tried the typical inputs for special attacks (as well as some button mashing). This puts players at a disadvantage in this fighting game, but it is still beatable.
South Park: Tokugawa is a well-made fighting game that fans of South Park and fans of classic fighting games will find humorous. The game engine is not perfect, but at least rudimentary combos can be executed, which is more than can be said for most Web-based fighting games!
