Upgrades are not absolutely necessary in this fighting game, but they make things much easier.

Aside from upgrades, your character can unlock a variety of skills in Nuclear Justice 2084. These do no cost money, but cost blood, sweat, and tears and are earned after defeating bosses. These special moves can be very useful, especially when facing large groups of enemies.
